What teachers say

Thank you so much for today β€” wow! The children got so much from this and thoroughly enjoyed it! I did too!

Claire Annese, Year 1 teacher, Gladstone Primary Academy

Kathy came to share her story 'Nana Duck' with our Year 2 classes. The children loved the story and were intrigued to find out how Kathy came to write it, incorporating features from the locality, such as oatcakes and the familiar 'Ay up duck'. Kathy was very well-prepared with a good range of resources. We would thoroughly recommend an author visit from Kathy.

Year 2 Staff, Werrington Primary School

Thank you so much for a great call! Everyone is happily working through the activities that you sent over!

Year 3 teacher following a Rescue Me Zoom session

Kathy came to our school, Abbotsholme, to share Nana Duck with the Reception, Year 1 & 2 pupils. We invited parents and nanas too. Everyone loved the story. I recommend every local primary school to invite Kathy in.

Ann Parker, Abbotsholme School

5β˜… β€” Used this book as support for story writing in Year 1. The children and their nanas loved it. Lots of familiar settings and a funny twist at the end.

Gill Shaw, Year 1 teacher

I read this with the children in my nursery class. They liked it very much. We had it up on a big screen; the children kept asking to see it over and over…

School Visits

Author school visits can inspire even reluctant readers! Kathy is an enthusiastic speaker who loves to visit schools to share her stories directly with children. Online visits can also be arranged via Zoom or Microsoft Teams β€” contact us for more information.

Kathy offers sessions for Reception – Year 6 and takes bookings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Shorter Nana Duck visits for nurseries can also be arranged. Average session length is 45 minutes to one hour; bespoke requirements are always welcome.

Sessions available

Reception – Year 2 & Nursery

Nana Duck

Set in North Staffordshire, Nana Duck fits perfectly with topics about our local area. Sessions run 45 minutes – 1 hour and include reading the story, a Q&A, and a short PowerPoint showing maps and discussing what "local" means. Children cover the difference between author and illustrator, watch a time-lapse of the painting process, and spot mistakes like an editor.

Included: Nana Duck colouring pages for every child.

Year 2 – Year 6

Rescue Me

A story of hope and kindness. Rescue Me shows that even a difficult start isn't the end of the story. Sessions run 45 minutes – 1 hour and include reading, a Q&A, and β€” in extended sessions β€” a group creative writing activity exploring what happens next.

Included: 6 worksheets covering vocabulary, adjectives, comprehension, alphabetical order, and a map & maths exercise.

Year 3 – Year 6

Work in Progress

Kathy is always working on new stories, giving older children a unique opportunity to shape a book before it's finished. The title The Whisker Twitchers came from a Year 3 class β€” they also designed a cover and wrote a blurb. These sessions give children a chance to be creative and understand how much effort goes into the finished product.
